The 1st Overtone Pitch Stability Exercise

Difficulty level: ★★★ (advanced)
To do this exercise you need to be able to go easily and steadily from the 1st overtone of a note to the corresponding note.

The purpose of this exercise is to work on your pitch stability while doing The 1st Overtone Exercise.

If you spent some time on The 1st Overtone Exercise, you should be able to go easily and steadily from the 1st overtone of a note to the corresponding note. If not, you should go back to The 1st Overtone Exercise.

Now, let’s have a look at the pitch stability using the Tuner and start over this exercise on Bb.

At first, you will probably have a large pitch difference between the two notes:

Ex2-PitchStability

There is almost a quarter tone…

While working on your air support, embouchure and tongue position, work on your pitch stability. It might be almost impossible to be really stable while switching from overtones to regular notes, but with consistent work you may at least obtain something like this:

Ex2-PitchStabClose

Still not perfect… If you can do better, send me a screen capture, I’ll be happy to add it here!

As before, once comfortable with Bb, move up to B, C and C#.
